Photo du Jour: Landlocked

For Landlocked, Baltimore-based photographer Ben Marcin uncovers some of the many abandoned boats that lie dormant and isolated in the middle of the woods that line the Eastern United States. Removed significant distances from shore, the boats have come to represent mankind’s increasing divorcement from the natural landscape, a theme explored in much of Marcin’s previous work.

Marcin’s boats are all pleasure vehicles built in part from fiberglass, a feature that disables them from decaying and dissolving into the surrounding landscape. The artist encountered this particular vessel in Baldwin County, Georgia as he made his way through a secluded pine forest. He explains that its origin remains a mystery, as there are no streets or houses in the vicinity. Marcin describes the now-forgotten, lonesome boat as “a hidden reminder of a human life that was once in its prime.”
